Shell to Develop Downstream Business in Indonesia

Kompas.com - 11/07/2011, 06:22 WIB

KUALA LUMPUR, KOMPAS.com - The world oil company Shell planned to develop downstream business in Indonesia in the next few years as an important country in Asia, CEO of Royal Dutch Shell Peter Voser said.

"As far as Shell is concerned, Indonesia is playing an important role in Asia and its growing population, market and demands," said Peter Voser here following a competition of low-energy consumption Shell Ecomarathon (SEM) Asia 2011 from July 6 to 9 at the Sepang international circuit. Voser hoped Shell’s growing downstream business in Indonesia would be further developed.

Speaking on energy consumption in the future, Voser said Shell is developing three pillars of future energy strategy, namely more energy, cleaner energy, and smarter energy. In increasing energy, Shell has developed new oil and gas resources needed by the world.

"Renewable energy sources will supply up to 30 pct of global energy by 2050, and only 3 pct in present. Shell has invested more than 100 billion US dollars from 2011 to 2014 in the development of renewable energy. In 2010 we wished to invest more than one billion US dollars in research and technological research," Voser said.

For cheaper energy, Shell produced more natural gas as cheaper and cleaner fossil fuel in 2012, as more than Shell’s production consisted of natural gas. "For smarter energy, we are offering products and services to help consumers obtain a profit from every drop of energy, including fuel oil, lubricants, detergents and asphalt for roads which will help consumers reduce costs and CO2 emissions," Voser added.

SEM Asia 2011 was attended by 94 teams from 12 countries and Shell CEOs in Asia, business circles, academicians, and non government institutions. The ten student teams were from University of Indonesia (UI), Bandung Institute of Technology ITB), Pontianak Polytechnichal institute (Polnep),Gadjah Mada University (UGM), and November Ten Institute of Technology (ITS) also took part in the prestigious competition.
